Need to know
0. Basic Decency
You are expected to draw a clear line between OOC and IC actions. Queerphobia, racism, sexism and ableism will absolutely not be tolerated OOC. Respect your writing partners, and respect their characters OOC.
Members will be banned if they disregard this rule repeatedly and have made no effort to better themselves. Staff will handle this on a case by case basis.
1. General RP Rules
Every level of writing is welcome. Same goes for RP experience.
No word count. No post matching required.
No powerplaying, no godmodding, no metagaming.
We employ the fluid time system. Major setting affecting events are documented [here]. You are responsible for keeping your characters’ timelines straight. You may timestamp your threads to do so.
2. Character Creation
Account per Character + 1 OOC Account.
Please register with one OOC account. If the staff has to contact you for any reason, we will always do so through this account.
After that, please register with a separate account for each character. By employing JCINK’s sub-account function, you can easily switch accounts without having to log on and off repeatedly.
Register with the naming conventions that apply to your character. Names have to be capitalized. Non-humanoids may have a one-word name, or only a first name. Please contact staff if you aren’t sure what applies to your character. OOC-accounts may be any name, though I would advise you to check the directory [here] to make sure your name is unique, as to avoid confusion.
There is no character limit.
2-1 ApplicationAfter registering your character account, you need to post your application before you can start playing. Our staff will either approve it, or contact you for changes that need to be done. If the application has been approved, staff will update claims and stat lists - all you have to do is either set up a plotter or jump straight into plotting and threading on your own.
2-2 Face Claims / Play-Bys
We allow any real life photography as well as Illustrations and paintings (not animanga) to be used as play-bys. You can use face claims (pictures of public figures such as actors, signed models or musicians) as you are used to, or you can use a picture to convey a characters aesthetic, or represent the location or object a Guardian Deity is protecting.
You may use existing illustrations, art you have the permission to use, commissions done for you or artwork you did yourself. Proper credit must be given in each case.
The avatar size for the mini profile is 200x300.
2-3 ArchetypesEach of your characters should be, however loosely, connected to an ‘archetype’ found in fairy tales and/or fables. Examples for these would be ‘The Huntsman’, ‘The clever fox’ or ‘The old king’. This may seem limiting at first, but there is an endless amount of possible archetypes out there! Your character idea probably already fits multiple without you realizing it. If you need help with finding an archetype, please contact staff.
3. Player created lore
Absolutely welcome! In fact, this board partly relies on its members to introduce new facets to the setting, be it through entirely new lore and species or an in depth expansion of already existing information.
There is one basic rule for new lore: It must be plausibly possible for it to exist in a fairy tale world.
A suggestion thread for lore and species will be available in the future.
No activity checks.
If you have not been online on any of your accounts in two months without giving reason, you are considered inactive. Staff will leave it in the hand of your RP partners to decide how they want to wrap up ongoing threads, or if they even wish to close them.
5. AccessibilityThis board is dedicated to be as accessible as possible on all fronts. If there is something you think or know we can improve upon, please do not hesitate to contact staff.
5-1 Trigger and Content Warnings
Content that is generally considered potentially triggering or upsetting must be designated as such with a content warning in the first post of a threat. This includes mentions of sexual assault, child (sexual) abuse, suicidal ideation and graphic violence, especially against marginalized groups. See rating for more.
If you should have any triggers you want your rp partners to avoid, it is your own responsibility to communicate them to your partner. However, should someone not respect your triggers or purposefully trigger you IC or OOC, please talk to staff immediately. Trigger warnings can, but do not have to be included in the first post of a thread.
5-2 Post TemplatesYou may use doHTML post templates in your posts, provided that they are readable. This includes the template having a pt size that is 11 or larger, no hovers, and scrollbars that only appear after 2 paragraphs of text.
PG - 16
This board is NOT premium. If member interest in premium is big enough, this can and will change in the future.
Excessive swearing or graphic descriptions of violence or substance abuse is not permitted (Depictions of violence - yes, gore - no). Anything sexual has to be implied only, fade to black or taken off board.
The RPG Rating for this board is L2S1V2or 2/1/2 (Two/One/Two)

Fairy Tale =/= Personified
Maerish is not a personified site, but an original site that focuses on original characters. You may not take a character from a medium that is inspired by fairy tales and adapt them 1:1. This includes Disney, Fables (Comics), OUAT and Into the Woods.
You may take inspiration from fairy tales, folklore and fables. These often use stock characters or archetypes instead of ‘characters’, and it is no problem to adapt one of these specific stock characters 1:1 onto the board, including plot points and background, provided you flesh them out and turn them from stock into a character. In such a case, it is required to clearly state the title of the work you are taking your character from in their application.
You may also take inspiration from the Disney, OUAT etc. version of fairy tales and characters, but be aware that in some cases, severe changes were made to the ‘original’ version. Familiarizing yourself with the non-Disney version of tales you are interested in is encouraged!
