Welcome to Maerish!
This is a little guide to make getting started that much easier, marking all the important lore threats, must know OOC information and ways to contact staff for your convenience. If you already know about the lore and are looking to quickly get into roleplaying, take a look at the Quick-Start-Guide below.
The first things you should read are the Plot [link] and the Rules [link].
Your next stop should be the lore threads. You are of course encouraged and welcome to read all of them, but for a first understanding of this setting, these are essential:
The basics of magic [link] - Power and Marginalization [link] - Cultural Taboos [link] - Religion and Spirituality [link] - Geography [link]
There are 8 unique species on Maerish. There are 4 types of humans, and 4 types of the folk (an umbrella term for magical species in this universe). They are:
Human [link] - Shifter [link] - Were [link] - Ghoul [link]
Guardian Spirits [link] - Fables [link] - The Fae (Nature Spirits + Fairies) [link]
It is recommend you skim over all species information before creating your first character. Player created species and additional lore will be accepted at a later point.
Witches, fairy godparents and familiars are not their own species, but rather professions. You can find information on them, as well as the famous Banwalt city guard, guilds and apprenticeship and spiritual professions in the Specialized Professions threads [link]. If you want to get a first idea of what kind of work your character could be doing or want to gauge where our current character's interests lie, you can head over to the Occupation Claim [link].
If you have an idea for a character already, that’s great! You can find the application here [link], and post it here [link]. Please clearly mark it as either WIP or finished! As soon as it is approved, you are welcome to post a plotter here [link] or start threading right away.
Claims are updated for you. You can find the face claim here [link], the Player’s directory here [LINK] and a list of canon characters here [LINK].
You are always welcome to contact staff directly if you should encounter any problem. We do also have a suggestion thread here [link] and a questions thread here [link] that is open to guests.
Have a great time at Maerish!

This Quick-Start-Guide is designed to give you a quick, easy way to dive into RP from creating your character to posting your first thread. It is assumed that you are already familiar with board rules and relevant setting and species lore.
On Maerish, each character is, however loosely, based on an archetype - a role commonly found in fairytales, fables or folklore. Well known examples would be the wise king, the sly fox or the swan woman. You can play with, subvert and expand on these archetypes all you want.
If you have absolutely no idea for a character, you can easily start by selecting an archetype and build off it. If you aren’t sure if something qualifies as an archetype, you might want to look at the accepted characters [link], at the resources thread, that can provide help in finding archetypes and stories, [here], or contact staff.
There is also a list of canons that are already worked into the site lore [link]. Taking up one of them is surely one of the fastest ways to a complete character, and comes with no added activity requirement. Their descriptions are left intentionally open, and many of them are almost entirely customizable, to really make them your own!
Another great way to dive in quickly is by taking up a wanted ad, which will also ensuer you a dedicated plot right from the get-go! On Maerish, we employ group Wanted Ads, Single Wanted ads and Plot Wanted ads that members can both create a new character for or offer up an already established one. [link].
Once you have a concrete idea, you can find the application template here [link]. Post it in this thread [link] and clearly mark it as WIP or finished in the tile. Once it is approved, you are free to start roleplaying.
You can post a plotter [link] - one for each of your characters or one for all of them, get right into roleplaying or start an open or closed thread as you wish. An updated list of all currently open threads can be found here [link].
Optional things and where to put them: Thread Trackers [link] - Character Development [link]
